Here are some ideas of what you could do in London for a day.
Tower of London
Currently at the Tower of London there is a beautiful and poignant art installation of poppies. Each poppy represents a serviceman or woman from the Empire who died during World War One.
Visiting the Tower, you are able to do a tour with a Beefeater, the history of the royal family comes alive before you and you feel like you are stepping back in time. The ticket price of £24.50 but there is enough there to keep you busy for a whole day.
If you book early enough (12 months in advance) you can also attend the ‘Ceremony of the Keys‘ where you get to witness the locking of the Tower in the same way they have done for hundreds of years
From the Tower you can head across the road to St Katherine’s Dock, it is a lovely area to wander around, lots of coffee shops and restaurants to enjoy a break.
From there you can cross the Tower Bridge, there is a museum underneath giving you an interesting history of the bridge and this area of London.
Southbank stretches along the Thames opposite the Tower of London. It is a hive of activity, when we were there was a festival just starting which looked really interesting, these change quite regularly. There are also plenty of places to get a drink so you can just sit and watch the world go by.. one was even set up as a beach where you can really relax.
And of course from Southbank you also get great views of the London Eye, Big Ben, HMS Belfast and watch the traffic along the River Thames.
There are plenty more things to explore in London but these are a good start to any visit.
